**Orientation of a Square**

**(In the Public Domain. No rights reserved.)**

Suppose we are given a square.

Without loss of generality, we can assume that it is oriented such that two of its sides are horizontal.

We do make this assumption, that it is so oriented.

Note: "side" is synonymously called "edge".

We do so so that we can unambiguously refer to its vertices and edges, namely:

the upper (or, top) left vertex

the upper (or, top) right vertex

the lower (or, bottom) left vertex

the lower (or, bottom) right vertex

the upper (or, top) edge

the lower (or, bottom) edge

the left edge

the right edge

In subsequent documents, such orientation is presumed whenever we assume we are given a square, unless explicitly stated otherwise.
